#Repost @soulfreshspringrolls • • • • • • Soul Fresh Spring Rolls #blackisbeautiful I didn’t want to post a visceral reaction to the current protests because I, like millions of black people, have experienced racial discrimination. As we have seen, these incidences can cause us to lose our lives. Racism kills. I carry a deep resentment to people who commit and perpetuate these acts. Enough has been enough. I want to tell you about the origin of the Black is Beautiful Sauce. I started making my first version of this sauce when I was a kid. When I started Soul Fresh Spring Rolls in 2017 this was the first sauce I thought about making. I had read about some espresso based bbq sauces and I made a few batches and liked it. I’ll never forget the reaction of someone I let try it. They said, “Ughh. It’s black.” My first instinct was to say, “Black is beautiful.” Even though they felt it was an innocuous comment it stung me at that moment. Looking back, in 2017 I had been feeling like blackness was under attack. People were becoming more emboldened to say and do racist things. I decided right there to name it Black is Beautiful Sauce. Above is the original sauce label. Black is beautiful. America wouldn’t be America without the contributions of black people. We don’t want a pat on the back. We want a hand out. Not some free stuff given out by the government, but a hand to lift us up and put us on the same standing as the rest of America. So that’s where Soul Fresh Spring Rolls stands with this movement. We want to see racism eradicated. It won’t happen overnight and it may not happen in my lifetime. We just have to keep fighting the good fight until it is. #blacklivesmatter #durhamight #🐂💪🏽
